Medical experts warn of risks regarding prolonged hoarseness

Medical experts warn that hoarseness lasting longer than four weeks should be taken seriously, as it may indicate underlying health issues beyond temporary irritation.

Associate Professor Eda Tuna Yalçınozan from Medicana Health Group explains that hoarseness—characterized by a muffled, raspy, or breathy voice—can stem from various causes. Common triggers include upper respiratory infections, excessive vocal strain, acid reflux, allergies, and smoking. Reflux, in particular, can cause throat irritation and morning hoarseness due to stomach acid reaching the larynx.

While many cases are benign, prolonged symptoms may signal more serious structural issues such as vocal cord nodules, polyps, cysts, or even tumors. Yalçınozan emphasizes that if hoarseness persists for more than a month, or is accompanied by difficulty swallowing, neck masses, or smoking, a detailed evaluation of the vocal cords and larynx is necessary.
