Medical groups protest police search of pediatric emergency center

Medical professional organizations in South Korea are calling for improved investigation protocols following a police search and seizure at a pediatric emergency medical center. The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency conducted the raid at Ajou University Hospital to investigate the death of a five-month-old infant during treatment this past summer.

The Korean Medical Association and the Korean Hospital Association have expressed concerns that conducting forced investigations in active emergency rooms could jeopardize patient safety and discourage doctors from practicing essential pediatric medicine. Medical groups argue that data, such as electronic medical records and duty rosters, could have been obtained through less disruptive means, such as voluntary submission or through hospital administrative departments.

In response, police stated they took measures to avoid interfering with patient care. They reported waiting approximately four hours for a treatment room to become vacant before conducting a brief two-minute photographic inspection. While there is no current law prohibiting searches in emergency rooms, the medical community is urging the establishment of specific guidelines to ensure that investigations in critical care areas, such as operating rooms and intensive care units, do not disrupt life-saving medical services.
