Medical guidance for managing GERD and digestive disorders
Medical experts emphasize that digestive disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gallstones, and colon cancer require distinct diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. While symptoms like recurring abdominal pain or changes in bowel habits may seem common, they necessitate medical evaluation to determine the appropriate treatment, which can range from lifestyle changes and medication to surgery.
Dr. Eko Priatno, a digestive surgeon, notes that surgery is not the primary option for all digestive issues. Treatment must be tailored to the specific diagnosis, severity, and patient condition to maintain quality of life.
Regarding GERD specifically, Dr. Jacqueline Wolf from Harvard Medical School suggests several non-medicinal management strategies. These include eating smaller, more frequent meals; avoiding trigger foods such as fatty, spicy, or minty items, as well as caffeine, chocolate, and alcohol; and avoiding carbonated drinks. Additionally, patients are advised to wait at least three hours after eating before lying down and to avoid strenuous physical activity or bending over immediately after meals.
