Medical guidance on identifying chronic fatigue and diabetes symptoms
Medical experts highlight the importance of distinguishing between various symptoms of fatigue and identifying non-obvious signs of underlying conditions like diabetes.
Chronic fatigue is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Potential causes range from sleep deprivation and high stress to anemia, thyroid disorders, infections, or psychological conditions. To aid diagnosis, it is crucial to track the duration, intensity, and accompanying symptoms such as shortness of breath, weight changes, or pain. Distinguishing between fatigue, sleepiness (the urge to fall asleep), and exhaustion (feeling powerless without necessarily needing sleep) is vital for clinical assessment.
In the case of diabetes, while thirst and frequent urination are primary indicators, other symptoms can be easily overlooked. Fluctuating vision, such as blurred sight in the morning that improves during the day, can result from blood sugar spikes causing fluid retention in the eye lens. Additionally, skin changes, including itchy skin, fungal infections, or brown spots on the shins and feet, serve as early warning signs for many patients.
