Medical guidelines highlight persistent VTE risk after hospital discharge
In observance of World Thrombosis Day on October 13, medical guidelines are highlighting the persistent risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) following hospital discharge. While clinical attention often focuses on prophylaxis during inpatient stays, the S3 Guideline 4.1 emphasizes that risks remain high after patients leave the hospital, particularly following surgeries, injuries, or periods of limited mobility.
A retrospective study of 529,492 non-surgical patients in California between 2013 and 2021 revealed that 77.6% of VTE events occurred after hospital discharge.
To address this, the guidelines suggest that medical professionals should reassess VTE risk at the end of inpatient treatment to tailor prophylaxis for subsequent rehabilitation or outpatient care. This recommendation focuses on organizational improvements, such as better documentation and more effective handovers to follow-up care providers, to ensure continuity of prevention.
