Medical insights on fibromyalgia and new oncology support in Argentina
Medical specialist Jorge Tartaglione has highlighted the challenges of fibromyalgia, a condition affecting approximately 3% of the global population. In Argentina, nearly one million people suffer from the disease, which is characterized by generalized pain, cramps, and extreme fatigue. A common symptom is ‘fibrofog,’ a mental fog that impairs clear reasoning.
Tartaglione noted that the condition is often misunderstood because traditional laboratory tests frequently return normal results, leading to patients being told their symptoms are psychological. Diagnostically, the condition is no longer treated as a diagnosis of exclusion; it requires persistent pain for at least three months alongside fatigue and specific index evaluations. The root cause is an alteration in the nervous system that raises the pain perception threshold.
In a separate development, the Buen Día Vida Association has signed a two-year agreement with the Ministry of Health in Santa Cruz, Argentina. This initiative aims to provide integral support for oncology patients and their families. The agreement will facilitate access to professionals in psychology, nutrition, and psychopedagogy through workshops and mutual aid groups, following the framework of Law 3.501 for the integral protection of cancer patients.
