Medical insights on sarcopenia and ataxia disorders

Medical experts are highlighting the impact of sarcopenia and ataxia on autonomy and quality of life. Sarcopenia is defined by Cristián Caparrós Manosalva, an academic at the University of Talca, as a muscle disorder involving the loss of both muscle mass and function, specifically strength. While often associated with aging, it is not inevitable; early intervention through strength training and proper nutrition can mitigate its effects.

Separately, ataxia is identified as a neurological disorder characterized by a loss of coordination and dexterity. Sara García Delgado, a physiotherapist at Hospital Quirónsalud Bizkaia, explains that ataxia can impair gait, balance, speech, and eye movements. These difficulties can make routine tasks, such as writing, dressing, or walking, significantly challenging and increase the risk of falls.
