Medical investigations reported in Portugal and Brazil

In Portugal, a doctor accused of gross negligence following the death of an oncology patient at the Hospital de Évora has submitted a resignation, effective September 30. The case, involving the death of Joaquim Coelho on July 15, is currently under investigation by the Ordem dos Médicos, the Évora Department of Investigation and Criminal Action, and the local health unit.

In Brazil, a prosecutor responsible for investigating child deaths at the Hospital da Criança in São Luís, Herberth Figueiredo, has been denounced to the National Council of the Public Ministry (CNMP). The Union of Counselors and Former Guardians of Maranhão (UNICECTMA) filed the complaint following statements made by Figueiredo suggesting the hospital's pediatric ICUs were functioning satisfactorily. The complaint alleges ethical infractions, arguing that the prosecutor provided reassuring public conclusions before completing investigations into mortality rates that have reportedly exceeded averages.
