Medical procedures performed in Arequipa, Peru

Surgeons at the Honorio Delgado Espinoza Regional Hospital in Arequipa successfully performed a thoracotomy to remove a 4-centimeter nail from the lung of 20-year-old José Acosta Montilla. The nail had been lodged near his heart for three days following an accident in Juliaca involving a nail gun. Dr. Juan Carlos Villavicencio Palomino, head of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, noted that the procedure prevented potential fatal hemorrhaging. The patient has been discharged to continue treatment in Trujillo.

In a separate medical event, a 20-day-old infant from Arequipa received a definitive epicardial pacemaker at the EsSalud National Cardiovascular Institute (INCOR). The baby was diagnosed with congenital atrioventricular block, a condition that causes insufficient heartbeats to supply blood to the body. The 45-minute surgery, performed by pediatric cardiovascular surgeons, successfully stabilized the infant, who is now undergoing follow-up monitoring.
