Medical professionals in Vietnam treat critical dengue fever and burn complications
Medical teams in Vietnam have successfully managed two severe clinical cases involving burn injuries and dengue fever complications.
In Khanh Hoa, doctors from the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Traumatology and Orthopaedics collaborated with Khanh Hoa General Hospital to perform surgery on a 9-year-old boy. The child had suffered fire burns in March 2024, resulting in severe scar contracture that prevented him from straightening his left leg, forcing him to crawl or hop to move. Surgeons performed a contracture release and skin grafting to restore mobility. One month post-surgery, the patient has regained significant leg extension.
Separately, at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, a 23-year-old man from Tuyen Quang was treated for critical dengue fever complications. Despite having no underlying health conditions, the patient developed Dengue shock syndrome, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and organ dysfunction. Due to life-threatening respiratory failure that did not respond to standard mechanical ventilation, doctors utilized Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VV-ECMO) for 13 days to stabilize the patient.
