Medical professionals integrate AI into training and pediatric care

Medical professionals are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into clinical training and pediatric practice. At the University of Wisconsin, neonatologists are developing an AI coach to assist in teaching the intubation of premature babies. This deep learning tool uses video examples to help students identify airway anatomy and the vocal cord region, aiming to improve the precision of this high-risk, lifesaving procedure.

Simultaneously, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has released new guidance regarding the use of generative AI in pediatric clinical care. The AAP emphasizes that AI tools must be designed specifically for children rather than adapted from adult models, as children are often underrepresented in training datasets. The guidance highlights the need for rigorous human oversight, data privacy, and the mitigation of bias to ensure that AI can safely support clinical decision-making and documentation in pediatrics.
