Veracruz healthcare workers protest medical supply shortages
Healthcare workers, medical residents, and patients' families in Veracruz, Mexico, have staged protests in Xalapa to denounce a critical shortage of medications and medical supplies within the IMSS-Bienestar system. Demonstrators reported a lack of essential items including antibiotics, syringes, gloves, gowns, and surgical materials, which has forced the suspension of approximately one thousand surgeries since November 2025 at the Centro de Alta Especialidad (CAE) Dr. Rafael Lucio.
The crisis has escalated following a video showing Roberto Ramos Alor, the state coordinator of IMSS-Bienestar, confronting medical residents. During the exchange, Ramos Alor reportedly told the residents that if they did not want to operate due to the lack of supplies, they should not do so. This comment has drawn widespread condemnation from medical organizations, including the College of Physicians and the College of Internal Medicine of Veracruz, which have called for immediate solutions and protections against professional retaliation for those reporting shortages.
Protesters have also highlighted that staff members are frequently forced to use their own personal funds to purchase basic supplies to ensure patient care. The demonstrators are calling for the resignation of Roberto Ramos Alor and have requested intervention from both state Governor Rocío Nahle García and federal health authorities to restore adequate hospital resources.
