Medical research and innovation receive major funding in Sweden

Region Stockholm has announced the winners of its annual Innovation Fund awards, which distributes 15 million SEK to projects benefiting residents and patients. The top innovation prize was awarded to the aICU program at Karolinska Institutet and Södersjukhuset, which develops AI-based decision support systems for intensive care. The implementation prize went to Karolinska University Hospital for using ultrasound guidance and Virtual Reality (VR) to reduce pain and anxiety in children during medical procedures.

In a separate development, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation has awarded significant grants to six researchers at Karolinska Institutet. These projects, spanning five years, focus on diverse medical frontiers including regenerative blueprints for hearing restoration, the role of uracil in cancer development, the regulation of gamma-delta-T cells for immunotherapy, and the molecular splicing codes that control brain circuit connectivity.
