Medical research identifies new links in canine dermatitis and chemotherapy nerve protection
Recent scientific studies have identified new biological markers and potential therapeutic pathways for chronic conditions.
Research conducted at the University of Edinburgh’s Royal School of Veterinary Studies has found a direct link between low concentrations of immunoglobulin A (IgA) in feces and canine atopic dermatitis (CAD). The study, funded by BSAVA PetSavers, compared 32 dogs with CAD to a control group of 36 healthy dogs. Results showed that IgA levels in the feces of affected dogs were significantly lower than in healthy dogs, though no significant difference was found in saliva levels or correlations with age and breed.
Separately, researchers at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have investigated the use of psilocybin to combat chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. In animal models, psilocybin appeared to protect nerve cells from damage without reducing the effectiveness of anti-cancer treatments. The protective effect is linked to the activation of 5-HT2A serotonin receptors. Scientists noted that non-hallucinogenic compounds targeting the same receptors could potentially provide these neuroprotective benefits without psychoactive effects.
