Medical research links medication adherence and cholesterol to cardiovascular risk
A study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress involving over 91,000 participants indicates that inconsistent use of antihypertensive medication significantly reduces cardiovascular protection. Research led by Qianqian Yang from the University of Oxford found that patients with at least 80% treatment adherence achieved better blood pressure control and a lower incidence of cardiovascular events compared to those with lower adherence.
Additionally, medical experts warn that uncontrolled high cholesterol, specifically LDL, contributes to the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries. This process can lead to serious complications in the heart, brain, and limbs. Factors such as diabetes, hypertension, and smoking further multiply these risks, often progressing without symptoms until severe events like heart attacks or strokes occur.
