Medical research links oral bacteria to heart valve disease and identifies natural artery formation mechanisms
New research presented at the American Heart Association scientific sessions suggests a potential link between periodontal disease and aortic valve stenosis. Preliminary studies indicate that Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium commonly responsible for gum disease, is also present on calcified and stenotic aortic valves. In mouse models, exposure to this bacterium led to increased bacterial accumulation on valves, higher levels of calcification, and symptoms related to stenosis, potentially mediated by the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β).
Separately, a collaborative study by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has identified the mechanism behind the heart’s ability to form natural collateral arteries. Using advanced cell lineage tracing technology, researchers discovered that approximately 80% of new collateral arteries originate from the transformation of capillaries. The study also identified Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (VEGFA) as a key driver in this process, suggesting that increasing VEGFA levels could promote collateral artery formation to mitigate myocardial ischemia.
