Medical researchers advance diagnostic approaches for heart failure

Medical organizations and research centers are proposing new methods to improve the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure. The Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA) has issued a statement advocating for the treatment of right heart failure as an independent clinical syndrome rather than a secondary consequence of left-sided heart disease. The HFSA recommends a structured, multiparametric diagnostic approach and a three-pillar concept for acute management in intensive care units to stabilize preload, afterload, and contractility.

In parallel, the DECIPHER-HFpEF study, conducted by the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), has demonstrated that specialized cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) can identify specific mechanisms behind heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). By combining CMR with invasive pressure-volume measurements, researchers found they could distinguish between different causes of impaired heart filling, such as diastolic dysfunction or increased passive stiffness of the heart muscle. These findings may allow for more targeted therapeutic interventions in the future.
