Medical researchers advance gene editing and AI diagnostic techniques
Researchers at the University of Coimbra have successfully tested a gene-editing strategy to address Machado-Joseph disease, a condition affecting brain and motor functions. The team, involving the Center for Neurosciences and Cellular Biology (CNC-UC) and the GeneT Center of Excellence in Gene Therapy, utilized extracellular vesicles as delivery vehicles for gene-editing tools. This approach aims to provide transient exposure to the machinery, potentially minimizing unintended edits and overcoming the limitations of conventional viral vectors, such as immune reactions.
In a separate development, researchers in Norway are using machine learning to redefine the understanding of migraines. By analyzing data from the Trøndelag Health Study, investigators found that artificial intelligence can identify migraine sufferers and distinguish between specific patient groups using broad clinical and biological data rather than relying solely on reported headache symptoms. This research suggests that migraine may be a spectrum disorder, potentially allowing for more personalized treatments based on distinct biological signatures.
