Medical researchers identify immune cell patterns in centenarians and new cancer treatment pathways
Researchers have identified unique immunological characteristics in individuals living beyond 110 years. According to a study published in the journal Nature, people with extreme longevity possess a significantly higher concentration of specific immune cells known as CD4+ cytotoxic T cells. While these cells represent approximately 4% of analyzed cells in those aged 70 to 90, they increase to 9.6% in centenarians and reach roughly 17.6% in those over 110. These rare cells are capable of recognizing and destroying other cells, including certain cancer cells, potentially helping maintain disease resistance at advanced ages.
In a separate development regarding cancer research, scientists have identified a molecular mechanism that could slow tumor progression. Research published in Communications Biology suggests that the cannabinoid receptor CB2R plays a role in how cancer cells behave and maintain tumor-forming capabilities. By using extremely low doses of THC to target this receptor, researchers were able to reduce the aggressiveness, invasion, and self-renewal capacity of breast cancer organoids in laboratory models. The study indicates that manipulating the CB2R pathway may prevent tumor cells from reverting to a more aggressive, immature state.
