Medical researchers in Argentina and Chile advance skin regeneration treatments

Medical researchers in Argentina and Chile are advancing new treatments for skin regeneration and wound healing.

In Tucumán, Argentina, the provincial Ministry of Health is launching a pilot clinical trial using Secretoma, a product developed in Spain. The treatment, composed of molecules generated from mesenchymal cells, is intended for patients with type 2 diabetes suffering from complex lower limb ulcers. The study will be conducted at the Centro de Salud Hospital and the Lomas de Tafí Hospital, comparing the evolution of patients receiving the new product against those receiving conventional treatment. The project was initiated following collaboration with researcher Luis Costa Pérez.

In Chile, an interdisciplinary team from the Federico Santa María Technical University has developed a biomimetic patch made from Ulmo honey. Using electrospinning technology, the team created a biodegradable nanofiber mesh designed to treat burns and difficult-to-heal wounds. The patch mimics the human tissue extracellular matrix to promote cell proliferation. Preliminary tests suggest that Ulmo honey performs as well as or better than Manuka honey in terms of human fibroblast viability, while offering a significant economic advantage due to its lower market cost.
