Medical researchers report breakthroughs in cancer immunotherapy and gum disease treatment

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have developed a new immunotherapy approach for treating pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, the most common and aggressive form of pancreatic cancer. Led by Dr. Marcus Ruscetti and Dr. Chaitanya Naimesh Parikh, the method utilizes a combination of messenger RNA (mRNA) and cytokines delivered in a single injection. In studies involving mice, approximately 50 percent of subjects showed complete tumor responses and remained disease-free for one year following the cessation of treatment.

In separate dental research, a study led by Nídia Castro dos Santos at Albert Einstein Hospital in Brazil found that a combination of low-dose aspirin and omega-3 supplements can be as effective as antibiotics in treating advanced gum disease, or periodontitis. In a clinical trial involving over 100 patients, approximately 58 percent of those receiving the aspirin and omega-3 combination saw improvement, matching the success rate of the antibiotic group. The researchers noted that omega-3 fatty acids help increase biochemicals that resolve inflammation, while aspirin enhances this effect.
