Medical researchers report breakthroughs in cerebral palsy diagnosis and Alzheimer's treatment
New medical research highlights significant advancements in the diagnosis of cerebral palsy and potential treatments for Alzheimer's disease.
A study published in Pediatrics: Open Science, involving data from the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, suggests that children with cerebral palsy should be diagnosed no later than age 4. This shift aims to facilitate earlier intervention and rehabilitation to optimize motor and cognitive functions. Analyzing a sample of 215,000 children, researchers found a prevalence of 2.4 per 1,000 children at age 8, with spastic paralysis being the most common subtype. At age 4, the prevalence was 2.2 per 1,000.
In separate developments, scientists at the University of South Carolina have reported success in reversing cognitive decline in mice with Alzheimer's models. Using a technology called Nano-ERASER, researchers targeted the PTBP1 protein to encourage astrocytes to transform into new, functional neurons. After two injections of a polymer nanogel containing specific antibodies, the treated mice showed improved cognitive functions and behavioral changes compared to untreated groups.
