Medical shift pay disparities reported across Spain

A report by the Simeg Foundation ‘Vicente Matas’ reveals significant disparities in medical shift compensation across Spain. As of July 2026, doctors in Catalonia receive 40.95 euros per hour for holiday shifts, while those working for Ingesa in Ceuta and Melilla receive 25.52 euros per hour—a difference of 60.46%.

The national average for holiday shifts is 33.04 euros per hour. In comparison, Ingesa medical staff earn 7.52 euros less than the national average. Similar discrepancies exist for standard workdays; Catalonia records 37.54 euros per hour, whereas Tenerife and Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands report 23.96 euros per hour.

The report notes that these pay gaps have increased compared to the previous year. Additionally, a pending 0.5% increase is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, contingent on the 2026 IPC variation meeting specific thresholds.
