Medical societies propose RSV protection strategy for infants in Dominican Republic

Medical societies in the Dominican Republic have presented a consensus document to health authorities recommending a combined strategy to protect newborns and infants from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

The proposal, developed by the Latin American Society of Vaccinology and the Dominican Society of Vaccinology with specialists in pediatrics, infectious diseases, and obstetrics, suggests two primary tools: maternal vaccination during pregnancy to transfer antibodies to the baby, and the administration of long-acting monoclonal antibodies to the infant when necessary.

The strategy aims to prioritize high-risk groups, such as premature infants, and emphasizes equity in access. The document serves as a technical resource for the Ministry of Public Health to define future immunization policies, though the recommendations have not yet been officially incorporated into the national immunization schedule.
