Medical specialization trends and rankings in Italy

Recent reports regarding medical specialization in Italy highlight both the quality of training at specific institutions and the shifting preferences of medical students. According to the ALS Index SSM2026, six specialization schools at the Università Magna Graecia in Catanzaro have ranked first in Italy. These disciplines include Otorhinolaryngology, Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, Digestive System Diseases, Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine, Psychiatry, and Internal Medicine.

The ALS Index utilizes anonymous questionnaires to evaluate training environments, focusing on clinical activities, work organization, research opportunities, and the protection of health and rights for trainees.

Parallel data from the Associazione Liberi Specializzandi (ALS) regarding student preferences shows a trend toward specialties that offer broader opportunities in the private sector. Cardiology, dermatology, and ophthalmology are among the most sought-after fields. Conversely, traditional disciplines such as urology and thoracic surgery appear at the bottom of the preference rankings.
