Medical struggles and donation needs reported in Slovakia and Czech Republic

Individual medical struggles and the importance of donation registries are highlighted in recent reports from Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

In Slovakia, a family is facing a dual tragedy. After losing their eight-month-old daughter to severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), the father has been diagnosed with inoperable cholangiocarcinoma. While he is undergoing chemotherapy, his health insurance provider has reportedly refused to cover his supportive treatment.

In the Czech Republic, a 12-year-old boy named Ondra, who was diagnosed with acute leukemia after appearing unusually pale during a pediatric visit, has found a highly compatible bone marrow donor. His mother, Tereza, expressed relief at the news, noting that a transplant offers a chance at a full recovery. Following the boy's story, Palacký University has organized a bone marrow donor recruitment event to encourage public registration, noting that suitable donors are still not found for one in four patients.
