Medical studies examine injury and cardiovascular risks in female athletes
Recent medical research has examined specific health risks and injury patterns among female athletes. A systematic review published in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine investigated differences in injury rates among scholastic and collegiate female lacrosse players, focusing on how competition levels impact these rates.
Separately, a study utilizing the HeartBytes database analyzed cardiovascular outcomes in youth female athletes in Southeastern Pennsylvania. By comparing 4,301 athletes in endurance-based sports with 697 in strength-based sports, researchers found statistically significant differences in cardiac screening findings, such as T-wave inversion and ST-segment depression, between the two groups.
