Medical studies link parental longevity and blood biomarkers to disease risk

New medical research highlights significant links between genetics, biomarkers, and long-term health outcomes. One study involving over 4,000 individuals from the US and UK suggests that having at least one parent who lived to age 100 is associated with a 42% lower risk of premature death and a 33% lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Additionally, descendants of centenarians showed a 32% lower risk of developing hypertension, with the onset of the condition delayed by approximately five years.

In separate findings, researchers led by Harvard Medical School professor Rachel Buckley have identified that high concentrations of the p-tau217 biomarker in blood can predict Alzheimer's disease risk. For older adults with healthy cognitive function, elevated p-tau217 levels indicate a 38% higher chance of showing early signs of dementia within five years, a risk that increases to 78% over a ten-year period. This blood test could eventually provide a less invasive alternative to expensive procedures like PET scans or lumbar punctures for assessing cognitive impairment.
