Medical studies link sleep patterns and statins to cognitive health
Recent medical research has identified two potential factors in the management and prevention of cognitive decline. A three-year study led by researchers from Concordia University suggests that stronger deep-sleep brain waves, specifically sleep spindles and slow waves, may help individuals with Alzheimer's disease maintain memory for longer periods. This brain activity appears to provide resilience against the harmful effects of orexin, a substance associated with wakefulness that is linked to memory impairment and inflammation in Alzheimer's patients.
In a separate large-scale study involving over 132,000 people, Danish researchers found that statins—drugs typically used to lower cholesterol and prevent heart attacks—may also reduce the risk of dementia by up to 15%. The researchers hypothesize that by lowering cholesterol and preventing the hardening of cerebral arteries, statins help maintain adequate blood flow to the brain, thereby mitigating the risk of neurological decline.
