Medical team removes rare desmoid tumor from patient's breast in Saudi Arabia

A multidisciplinary medical team at King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz University Hospital, part of Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, has successfully removed a rare desmoid fibroma from a Saudi patient's breast.

The tumor, measuring 15 x 14 cm and weighing 236 grams, had extended into the chest wall muscles. Dr. Areej Al-Hamid, the lead consultant in general and breast surgery, noted that desmoid tumors are rare and capable of invading adjacent tissues and muscles.

Following the complete excision with clear surgical margins, the team performed immediate breast reconstruction using the patient's own tissue. This approach avoided the use of silicone implants or tissue expanders. The surgical effort involved specialists in breast surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, radiology, pathology, anesthesia, and nursing.
