Bursa doctors perform rare valve-in-valve heart procedure

Medical teams in Bursa, Turkey, have performed a rare cardiac procedure for the first time in the country. A 76-year-old patient, Şükran Can, underwent a specialized Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) to address a malfunctioning mechanical aortic valve.

Because the patient had previously undergone two open-heart surgeries and possessed limited lung capacity, a third open-heart operation was deemed too high-risk. Instead, surgeons utilized a ‘valve-in-valve’ method via catheter to place a new bioprosthetic valve inside the existing metallic valve. This procedure, which is performed on only a limited number of patients worldwide, was led by Prof. Dr. Hasan Arı at Bursa Yüksek İhtisas Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi.

In a separate successful minimally invasive procedure in Istanbul, a 67-year-old patient with a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm was treated using eight different stents via a closed method. This endovascular approach was chosen because the patient’s COPD made traditional open surgery extremely dangerous.
