Medical technology advances aim to revolutionize wound care and health monitoring

New medical technologies are poised to transform the management of chronic wounds and long-term healthcare monitoring. A developing smart bandage device is designed to monitor non-healing lesions, such as diabetic ulcers and pressure sores, by analyzing bodily fluids in real time through internal microchannels.

Equipped with chemical sensors, the device can measure pH, temperature, and inflammatory molecules, transmitting clinical data to a smartphone. This technology aims to detect infections up to two days before visible symptoms appear, potentially preventing complications without requiring the frequent removal of dressings.

In a broader context, the Technology Foresight project by Politecnico di Milano identifies several emerging innovations that could reshape healthcare by 2040. Key technologies include artificial intelligence, biosensors, digital twins, and neurotechnology. These advancements suggest a shift toward proactive prevention and continuous monitoring, allowing for earlier recognition of health risks through wearable devices and connected tools.
