Medical transport and driving regulations for patients in Germany

In Germany, individuals with a care level of 2 (Pflegegrad 2) may be eligible for medical transport coverage under specific conditions. If a person with care needs has limited mobility, doctors can prescribe medical transportation to the nearest outpatient treatment facility. This prescription, officially known as a “Verordnung einer Krankenbeförderung” or “Muster 4,” allows health insurance providers to cover costs for services such as taxis, public transport, or specialized medical transport vehicles.

The selection of transport depends on the patient's current health status and mobility. While most transport must be approved by health insurance in advance, certain exceptions exist. Medical transport is categorized into sick transport, which requires medical supervision during the trip, and general medical trips.

Separately, medical conditions such as a stroke can significantly impact a person's ability to drive. Post-stroke recovery involves addressing symptoms like paralysis, speech disorders, or balance issues. Factors such as medication, epilepsy, or cardiovascular diseases may temporarily or permanently restrict driving eligibility, necessitating early consultation during rehabilitation.
