Medical updates on kidney stone prevalence and lung inflammation research

Medical experts are highlighting the prevalence and risks of kidney stones, noting that approximately 10% to 12% of the population is affected. Urology specialist Prof. Dr. Ramazan Gökhan Atış warns that untreated kidney stones can lead to severe health issues, including permanent kidney damage and life-threatening infections if they cause complete urinary tract obstruction. He emphasizes the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for severe pain and fever, and notes that treatment plans must be tailored to the size and location of the stone.

In separate respiratory research, scientists from Trinity College Dublin and St. James’s Hospital have found that the steroid dexamethasone may help manage chronic lung inflammation caused by Mycobacterium avium (M. avium). The study, published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases, suggests that dexamethasone can reduce harmful inflammatory signaling in human macrophages without compromising the cells' ability to control bacterial growth. This approach aims to limit the damaging inflammation associated with non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections rather than focusing solely on killing the bacteria.
