Medical workforce diversity linked to improved rural healthcare access
Research from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) indicates that Māori and Pacific medical graduates are more likely to practice in regional, rural, and underserved communities compared to the broader graduate cohort. The findings suggest these doctors are more likely to remain practicing in Aotearoa New Zealand ten years after graduation.
Dr. John Mutu-Grigg, Chair of the RACS Māori Health Advisory Group, emphasized that achieving healthcare equity requires directing resources to where the need is greatest rather than treating all communities identically. RACS is calling on political parties to commit to evidence-based resource allocation to address unmet surgical needs and support equitable access for Māori, Pacific, and rural populations.
In Australia, Dr. Merran Auland, recipient of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) Distinguished Service Award, highlighted the impact of regulations requiring international medical graduates to work in rural areas. Dr. Auland, a rural generalist anaesthetist, noted that such requirements helped her develop expertise in remote regions including Bourke, Nyngan, and Broken Hill.
