Medicare Advantage plans facing widespread closures for millions of seniors

A significant number of Medicare Advantage plans are being discontinued, leaving millions of seniors with fewer coverage options. In 193 U.S. counties, no Medicare Advantage plans will be offered at all, a notable increase from 120 counties last year. These areas are primarily located in rural regions, though some major metropolitan areas are also affected.

Major insurers are driving these exits. Humana announced it will discontinue plans affecting approximately 600,000 members, while UnitedHealthcare is closing plans for roughly 390,000 members due to rising costs and increased plan usage. Additionally, Molina Healthcare is ending its traditional Medicare Advantage plans with prescription drug coverage after 2026 as part of a strategic shift toward dual-eligible members.

Estimates of the total number of affected individuals vary, with some analyses suggesting between 2 million and 5 million seniors will be impacted. Because Medicare Advantage is a privatized version of Medicare that often includes dental, vision, and drug benefits, these closures force seniors to find replacement plans before the December 7 open enrollment deadline to ensure continuity of medication and provider networks.
