Medicare Advantage enrollees face widespread plan terminations

Millions of Medicare Advantage enrollees face significant coverage disruptions as health insurers overhaul their offerings. Approximately 2.9 million beneficiaries are affected by the termination or nonrenewal of roughly 680 Medicare Advantage plans, with many policies set to end on December 31, 2026.

Industry experts attribute this upheaval to rising medical costs outpacing federal reimbursements. The changes often result in fewer available plans, higher out-of-pocket costs, and reduced supplemental benefits. In New Mexico, for example, insurers including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Presbyterian, Christus, and SCAN are discontinuing various plans, potentially impacting between 30,000 and 50,000 residents.

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, providing a window for beneficiaries to select new coverage. Experts advise enrollees to prioritize doctor networks and specific medical needs over advertised extras like dental or grocery benefits to avoid unexpected medical bills.
