Medicare enrollment options for veterans using VA healthcare
Veterans who rely entirely on the Veterans Administration (VA) for healthcare have the option to decline Medicare Part B enrollment when they turn 65. However, Medicare Part A remains mandatory for those collecting Social Security after age 65.
While Part B is optional, failing to enroll during the initial enrollment period can result in a permanent late enrollment penalty if the individual later decides to seek coverage outside the VA system. VA healthcare is not considered ‘creditable’ for Medicare purposes. Veterans must weigh the decision between exclusive VA use and the flexibility of using any healthcare provider across the United States through Medicare coverage.
