Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program Set to End 2027, Threatening Access for Seniors

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge demonstration, launched on July 1, 2026, lets eligible Medicare Part D enrollees obtain the weight‑loss drugs Wegovy, Zepbound and the oral GLP‑1 Foundayo for a fixed $50 monthly copay. An estimated 3.8 million beneficiaries meet the eligibility criteria of a BMI ≥ 27 and at least one related comorbidity. The program operates outside the standard Part D framework through a contract with Humana and does not count toward deductibles or out‑of‑pocket caps.

The temporary initiative expires on December 31, 2027, and no permanent legislative solution has been enacted to overcome Medicare’s statutory prohibition on covering obesity drugs. Once the program ends, seniors could lose access to treatments that currently cost over $1,000 a month, risking weight regain and related health setbacks.

The situation reflects a broader access crisis for GLP‑1 medicines. Insurers and pharmacy benefit managers are tightening coverage and prior‑authorization requirements due to the high cost of these drugs, while supply shortages threaten both diabetic patients and those using the drugs for weight loss. The combined effect places millions of Americans at risk of reduced treatment continuity and higher out‑of‑pocket expenses.
