Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program expands obesity drug access

Medicare has launched the GLP-1 Bridge, a temporary pilot program through December 31, 2027, designed to expand access to anti-obesity medications for eligible Part D beneficiaries. Under this initiative, eligible patients can access certain GLP-1 receptor agonists for a capped monthly copay of $50.

Major pharmacy chains, including CVS and Walgreens, report significant initial uptake. As of mid-August, both retailers have filled approximately 100,000 prescriptions each under the program. Walgreens noted that uptake has exceeded expectations and that roughly half of the patients served through the program had not previously used GLP-1 medications.

To qualify, beneficiaries must meet specific clinical criteria, such as having obesity combined with difficult-to-control high blood pressure. However, the program excludes individuals with sleep apnea or Type 2 diabetes, as these conditions are already covered under existing Medicare Part D provisions. The program utilizes a separate nationwide process for prior authorization and pharmacy claims to manage the rollout.
