Medicare Open Enrollment for 2027 begins October 15

The Medicare Open Enrollment period for 2027 begins on October 15, allowing beneficiaries to compare and change plans before the January 1 effective date. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the weighted average monthly premium for Medicare Advantage (MA) plans is expected to decrease by 16.5%, dropping from $14.37 in 2026 to $12.00.

In contrast, average monthly premiums for standalone Prescription Drug Plans (Part D) are projected to rise slightly from $35.09 to $36.00. However, for MA plans that include prescription coverage, the average monthly Part D premium is expected to fall from $11.32 to $7.00 after accounting for rebates.

Health officials and consumer advocates are warning seniors to remain vigilant against seasonal scams during this period. Fraudsters often impersonate Medicare or private insurers to steal Social Security numbers or bank details. Beneficiaries are advised to use official tools at Medicare.gov and to hang up on unsolicited callers. KFF analysis notes that while many beneficiaries can stay in their current plans, some may find their existing plans are no longer available, necessitating a proactive review of options.
