Medicare Open Enrollment: Key considerations for plan changes
The annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP), running from October 15 through December 7, allows beneficiaries to reevaluate, add, drop, or switch their health coverage. Changes typically take effect on January 1.
One critical consideration for beneficiaries is the decision to switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare. While Medicare Advantage plans, administered by private companies, often bundle medical, dental, and vision benefits, they frequently require users to stay within a specific provider network to avoid higher costs.
Switching to Original Medicare may necessitate a Medicare supplement policy, known as Medigap, to cover costs that Original Medicare does not pay. However, unlike the annual Medicare OEP, Medigap enrollment is subject to different rules. In many states, insurers can use medical underwriting to evaluate an applicant's health, meaning they may decline coverage or charge higher premiums based on pre-existing conditions. This creates a risk for those who leave Medicare Advantage without first securing a Medigap policy.
