Medicare Open Enrollment period begins for 2027 coverage

The Medicare open enrollment period runs from October 15 through December 7, allowing beneficiaries to review and modify their healthcare coverage for the upcoming year. During this window, individuals can make changes to Prescription Drug plans (Part D), Medicare Advantage plans (Part C), or switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage or Medigap insurance.

Experts recommend that seniors review their plans annually, as fees and coverage details frequently change. In Iowa, beneficiaries have access to 64 Medicare Advantage plans, nine stand-alone Medicare Part D plans, and 12 standardized Medigap plans for 2027. Resources such as the Medicare Plan Finder and the Iowa Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) are available to assist with navigating these choices.

Additionally, seniors with limited income should check eligibility for Medicare Savings and Extra Help programs, which can assist with healthcare and medication costs.
