Medication co-payment systems and cost reduction strategies
In Portugal, the state provides medication co-payment (comparticipação), where the government covers a percentage of the sale price based on the therapeutic importance of the drug. Patients are responsible for the remaining balance, known as the user charge.
Specific provisions exist for pensioners whose annual income falls below a legally defined threshold, allowing them to access higher co-payment percentages. While these benefits are often applied automatically via tax data, individuals are encouraged to verify their status at pharmacies or health units.
To minimize costs, consumers can utilize generic medications. Electronic prescriptions identify active substances rather than specific brands. Co-payments are calculated based on a reference price for the drug group; if a patient selects a brand that exceeds this reference price, they must pay the full difference. Additionally, most supplements, hygiene products, and non-prescription medications do not qualify for state subsidies.
