Medications that may impair heatwave coping abilities

Certain common medications can impair the body's ability to cope with increasing heatwaves by affecting sweating, thirst, blood circulation, and temperature regulation.

Antidepressants such as sertraline, fluoxetine, escitalopram, and venlafaxine may interfere with how the brain regulates body temperature through their impact on serotonin. Stimulants used for ADHD, such as Ritalin, can increase internal heat production and narrow blood vessels, making natural cooling more difficult and potentially masking signs of overheating.

Medications for blood pressure and heart conditions also pose risks. Diuretics can lead to electrolyte imbalances, while ACE inhibitors and ARBs may disrupt the hormonal mechanisms that trigger thirst. Beta-blockers can restrict blood flow to the skin, hindering heat dissipation. The risk of serious complications, including damage to the heart and kidneys, is heightened when these drugs are taken simultaneously or combined with dehydration.
