Medieval font sent to Prince Charles' school returns to Shropshire

The 12th‑century Norman tub font from St Michael’s Church in Upton Cressett, Shropshire, was moved in the early 1960s to the chapel of Gordonstoun School in Moray, Scotland, after Prince Philip visited the dilapidated church and decided the object should accompany his son, Prince Charles, during his education.

The font remained at the school throughout Charles’s years there, then was returned to its original location in the 1970s. St Michael’s is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust, of which Charles serves as patron, and the font is still used occasionally for baptisms.
