Medieval villages in southern France showcase historic religious heritage

Several historic medieval villages in southern France, recognized as ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’, highlight the region's deep architectural and religious heritage.

Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, located in the Hérault department, is perched on cliffs overlooking the Hérault gorges. The village features the Abbey of Gellone, founded in 804 by William of Orange, which includes a notable Carolingian cloister. The site has been classified as a ‘Grand Site de France’ since 2011.

In the Aude department, the village of Lagrasse is noted for its medieval structures, including a 14th-century market hall and ancient ramparts. The town is centered around the Abbey of Sainte-Marie-d'Orbieu, a Benedictine monastery with origins dating back to the reign of Charlemagne. Local legend suggests the monastery was placed under imperial protection following a miracle in 778.
