Medijana municipality to fund scholarships for philosophy students in Niš after government budget cuts
Local officials in the Medijana municipality announced plans to provide scholarships covering tuition for students of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Niš. The initiative responds to a recent Serbian government decision that eliminated budget-funded places in three departments of the faculty and reduced them in others, leaving many students without state support.
The proposal, supported by local MP Đorđe Stanković, would have the municipality pay the amount of tuition that students would otherwise have to cover themselves. Advocates argue that education is an investment, quoting the statement, “Obrazovanje nije trošak, već najvažnija investicija svakog društva.” The move aims to prevent increased financial burden on families and curb the out‑migration of young people from Niš.
