Mediobanca could return to Milan via Intesa Sanpaolo's potential MPS takeover
The landscape of Italian finance is shifting as Carlo Messina, head of Intesa Sanpaolo, formally moves to acquire MPS. This potential takeover could include Mediobanca and a 13% stake in Generali.
If the acquisition succeeds, Mediobanca—originally founded in Milan in 1946—would return to the control of the Milanese financial hub. This follows a period where the institution's trajectory had shifted toward Central Italy under the control of MPS. The move is seen as a way to consolidate northern financial independence and create a major national player capable of competing on a larger scale.
