Medisch Spectrum Twente receives 1 million euros for ICU coma research

Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) and Rijnstate have been awarded a 1 million euro subsidy from ZonMw to expand research into the treatment of patients in artificial comas following cardiac arrest.

Currently, standard procedure involves keeping these patients sedated and on ventilators for at least 24 hours. However, a pilot study utilizing EEG to monitor brain activity suggests that patients with rapidly recovering brain rhythms can safely be woken earlier. According to researcher Marleen Tjepkema, these patients required less medication, were taken off ventilators sooner, and spent nearly 50 percent less time in the intensive care unit compared to a control group.

The new funding will allow the study to include larger patient groups and multiple hospitals across the Netherlands. Researchers aim to evaluate long-term brain function recovery as well as the cost-effectiveness of this approach. Positive results could lead to international changes in post-cardiac arrest treatment protocols.
